The YAMAGA Blanks saltwater fly rods are very powerful and designed for casting big flies in windy conditions and fighting hard fighting fish.
It has a nice bend when pulling strong fish with plenty of lifting power. The butt section employs Nanoalloy technology and helps to also shoot line further.
The arrival of the sample test rods just missed the Maldives trip. As we were eager to try them out (more excuses to fish) We visited some ponds with the 8wt and 10wt and challenged them against big groupers, redfish, barramundi, mangrove jack, pacu and iridescent shark (patin).
The rods have no problem delivering wind resistant flies a long way. We could cast 90 to 100 feet without much problem and they handled those heavy hard-fighting fish with relative ease demonstrating a very powerful backbone.
Coming soon are the 9wt and 12wt according to the manufacturer. Can’t wait to try them on sailfish and I’ve a feeling they’ll be just great by the way the ones we’ve fished feels.
As with all fly rods, some casters will like it while some will hate it. As the rods are very fast, it feels better when using lines with heavier heads, which is what you’ll find in most saltwater fly line anyway.
