After spending a week here I have a much better idea what my choice of gear selection would be like if I ever come back to fish here.
This is just my preference and others may feel differently.
Rod 1: 300-350 grain for permit
Rod 2: 300 grain for tarpon/barracuda
Rod 3: #6 for fun on calm days
Note: we were advised not to bring more than four rods with us to avoid problems with the local customs in the airport.
Fly lines I used this time was
- SA Saltwater WF10F 300 grain (worked well overall)
- Rio Premier Bonefish WF7F 198 grain (quite hopeless in strong winds)
- Rio Elite Flats Pro WF6F/I 185 grain stealth tip (great on calm days)
Fly Rods
- Yamaga Blanks Enne 8 fly rod
- Winston Boron III Plus 8wt
- Winston Air Salt 6wt
Leaders
- Bonefish leaders 8-12 pounds 9-12ft
- Permit leaders 14-16 pounds fluorocarbon 12-15ft
- Tarpon leaders 40-60 pounds fluorocarbon
Flies
- Bonefish: Charlie, gotcha
- Permit: spawning shrimps, crabs
- Tarpon: seaducers, streamers
Flies used here are generally on the small side.
Let me know in the comments below what are your choice gear for flats fishing so I can get some idea.
Leave a question too if you have any. Thanks!
