The problem with catching a big fish on your first trip to a certain destination is that it sets the bar high for your subsequent trips there. You’ll usually want to fish a certain destination again if you enjoyed yourself the first time. That memorable catch before can set the bar so high that the following trips may seem somewhat disappointing even though they are actually not, it is just that we may have the wrong expectations.
This video shows the excitement when Tim hooks and I went chasing after a big mahseer with the landing net.
Surprise Snakehead
Before catching this solid big mahseer, Tim actually hooks a forest snakehead before the pool.
I notice some intermittent rises near the river bank on top of what we later discover are dead leafs. Tim places his hopper on top and soon after something engulfs it off the surface.
We thought it was a mahseer but as I was wading towards it with the landing net, sees that it is a snakehead!
You can see that catch in this complete trip video.
The Big One
After some photos, Tim went on to cast into the pool up ahead. This pool is fed with gushing water from a set of rapids.
The water explodes and the hopper vanishes, it is a huge take…reminding me of a GT strike in saltwater!
The fish swam away from Tim and towards the opposite bank, but the line suddenly goes limp and we thought the fish came off the hook.
I pressed the camera to stop recording only to realise the fish has actually turned around and swam past us downstream, all hell breaks loose!
