I’ve tried many fly patterns over the years fly fishing sailfish in Kuala Rompin. I’ve seen clients’ flies and also tweaked and experimented with different fly patterns and colours.
In this post I want to show you some of the flies we’ve used and have had success with. I hope you find this useful. Will update with more fly patterns (when I remember to!).
Colours
Universally and for the longest time, pink-white flies seem to be the most “effective” colour. This fact is widely shared by anglers and in the internet.
I’ve had many success with pink, too. And we’ve also caught sailfish using green, blue, white, silver…basically other coloured flies but not as many as pink flies.
I cannot help but wonder is that because sailfish really prefer pink? Or the higher catch rate is simply because due to confidence, anglers simply tie on pink flies from the get go and that colour will naturally end up with more fish.
Anglers can be a very superstitious bunch. Lucky rod, lucky reel, lucky shirt, lucky underwear…you name it.
Does Size Matter?
The flies I use range from 6 to 10 inches length.
Floating or Sinking?
Foam popper head for that plop and blooop are popular. Cam Sigler popperheads or anything similar can be used for this purpose.
Casting big wind-resistant heavy flies is not the easiest especially for those not used to it.
Practice those cast.
Floating, intermediate, full sink and sink tip fly lines all work.
Read this post about fly lines and leaders
Again, practice those cast. You may only get one shot.
