Look at all those groupers in the water

Okay, time for another quickie pond session. Not everyone’s cup of tea but some fishing is better than no fishing in my book.

If you want to tussle with some groupers, this is the time to do it.

Get your bum over to SW Jurassic now as they’ve transferred all the groupers from pond B into pond A.

Business has not been what the owners had hoped for, hence the move to concentrate on only one pond now instead of two previously.

Go Grope Some Groupers

Fishing with Nick this morning (28/4/16), I could see groupers all around the edges of the pond so thick you could probably walk on them.

I had a hit the first cast I made after arriving and landed that fish. Followed by another three more groupers the first hour alone and had another couple more come off.

Because the water is fairly clear, every time the fly hit the water I can see a few fish swimming towards it. That doesn’t mean the fish will hit the artificial bait without hesitation.

They can be cautious and will swim up and stare at your offering as it slowly sinks down. At times, a fish will rush in to grab the fly but most times the are cautious.

Fished with heavier gear this time hoping to get a monster – ended up with quantity over quality

Action Plan

So you need to work out an action plan i.e. what action you want to impart onto your offering and find what works for that particular day and time.

I had success with slow-sink, pause twitch pause, long pause and twitch.

After the second hour I wanted a new challenge and thought the fish may be receptive to topwater lure due to their behavior and so I tried with a small popper but only had follows from some groupers and barramundi but no takes. It may be too late as the sun is already quite high and getting warm.

After trying for a bit more I switched back to a wet fly and swapped the Sage reel with the Rio GT WFF to the Lamson Speedster loaded with the Rio Outbound Short that’s a sink tip.

The action resumed albeit a little slower. And then Nick discovered the fish has a yearning for crab fly so I switched the deceiver to a crab and had more fun.
