Alaskan expat, Mike’s brief stay here in Malaysia must have been memorable and he’s having a great experience making new friend, different cultures and everything, and fishing for new fish species.
Mike is a funny guy and naturally, fun to have around. I am quite sure all the local fly fishers who knows him personally feels the same.
I still remember the first time he stepped into the, some say the best fly shop in Asia (!), Tacklebox Adventures where naturally he met Nick.
Doc Ling (IFFF Certified Master Casting Instructor) and myself happened to be there and we started chatting with Mike about the fly fishing scene in Malaysia.
Our conversation eventually moved to a nearby kopitiam (Chinese coffee shop) and from then on, Mike has not just been meeting up regularly but also fishing with us, joining the group for fly casting sessions at the field among “other” activities.
It’s going to be sad when he goes back to Alaska. Cold freezing Alaska in comparison to hot sunny, wet and at times, very hazy Malaysia.
Mike have also been fishing quite a bit during his time here in Malaysia including a trip for mahseer in Thailand.
We hope he’ll visit us when he gets the chance and perhaps we’ll also drop by in his lakeside cabin and catch some of his salmon and trout. That would be awesome.
He leaves us with this great experience in Rompin fishing for sailfish and this video of his first sailfish on fly below.
