When you’re after Red Kaloi (Giant Red Gourami), you’ll need some beefy fly rods—I suggest 8-10wt rods. Those are strong fish in snag-filled jungle rivers.
You’ll want to use big foam popper/hopper/cockroach flies and 40-60lb leaders.
I personally don’t think the reel matters much as you will be playing the fish with the line in hand mostly, to keep them from diving into the trees below.
Fly Fishing Gear Setup
- Rod: 8-10 weight
- Line: 8-10wt floating line
- Leader: 40lb–60lb fluorocarbon to withstand pointy teeth and abrasive snags
- Flies: Large foam hopper patterns, and poppers, tied on 3/0 to 4/0 hooks
Clothing
- Hat
- Sun gloves
- Long-sleeve, quick-drying clothing for humid tropical jungle conditions
Footwear
- Comfortable quick-dry trekking shoes or sandals such as Crocs
